Yanni Hufnagel Shares Insight Into Recruiting Success



Yanni Hufnagel has made a name for himself as a successful assistant basketball coach. A native of Scarsdale, New York, Hufnagel has coached at major universities like Harvard University, California University and now Vanderbilt. He has built a reputation as a great recruiter and someone who has a great eye for evaluating talent.


Yanni Hufnagel is a graduate of Cornell University where he earned a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations. During his schooling days he played multiple sports including basketball and lacrosse. After college Yanni had the opportunity to work as a graduate assistant coach for the University of Oklahoma men’s basketball team. It was during this time that Hufnagel the opportunity to work with future NBA All-Star Blake Griffin.


Yanni Hufnagel’s success as a recruiter does not come as a surprise. He has a set of criteria that he uses to help him decide which recruits to go after. Yanni Hufnagel has three questions that he asks about every player he is considering recruiting: Are you a winner?; Are you coachable?; Are you someone I’d like to be around? In addition to these questions Yanni believes he can learn a lot from speaking to a player on the phone. His initial impression is usually pretty accurate. Finally, Yanni has no problem letting the head coach give his input on the player. Yanni has had the privilege of working with some great head coaches. Those coaches include Kevin Stallings, Cuonzo Martin and Tommy Amaker just to name a few.


Yanni Huffnagel is also aware of current trends in the college basketball world.

He is a believer in analytics and supporter of Ken Pomeroy. He likes the overall direction college hoops is moving in. Currently Yanni is an assistant coach with Vanderbilt.
